The regulatory environment governing online gaming is changing rapidly. With the recent Department of Justice opinion declaring that the 1961 Wire Act (which restricts wire transfers across state borders for the purpose of gambling) only applies to sports betting, there is now nothing preventing individual states from legalizing online poker on an intrastate basis. Nevada and Washington, D.C. moved quickly to pass bills to legalize online gambling, while lawmakers in California, Illinois, Iowa and New Jersey have indicated that they plan on introducing legislation shortly.

Analysts project that within one year, online gambling will be legal within at least fifteen different states, and by the end of 2014, online gaming is expected to be a $46.3 billion industry. Brand awareness is of critical importance, and accordingly, land-based casinos with established brand names are best-positioned to succeed in the space.
